Net pension in Italy

On a gross pension of €24,000, single, €18,837 is left net, that is €1,570 a month. A pension pays no INPS contribution at all, so the whole gap is tax. Adjust the amount and the household below.

What this page does not say

This calculation assumes you are tax resident in Italy and that the pension is taxable there. It does not decide WHERE a cross-border pension is taxable. That is settled by the tax treaty between the two states, and the answer depends on the type of pension, so two pensions paid to the same person can fall to two different states.

Our editorial notes set it out corridor by corridor, in French: a Swiss pension abroad, returning to France, Italy, Spain. For an individual situation, the characterisation belongs to a tax lawyer.

How the figure is built

The pension is taxable IN FULL. Art. 49 para. 2 let. a of the income tax code counts pensions of every kind, and the allowances treated as such, among employment income. An employee scale and surcharges therefore apply, but no INPS contribution is due on a pension, so nothing comes off the base the way 9.19% does for an employee.

The 2026 scale then applies: 23% up to 28,000 EUR, 33% up to 50,000 EUR and 43% above. Next comes the tax credit specific to pension income, which is taken off the tax rather than the base. It is 1,955 EUR up to 8,500 EUR of income, falls to 700 EUR at 28,000 EUR, and runs out at 50,000 EUR. At 8,500 EUR it cancels the national tax exactly, which is its purpose. The credit for employment income expressly excludes pensions.

The regional and municipal surcharges are computed on the same base and are NOT reduced by the credit, which offsets national tax only. That is why a pension of 8,500 EUR, whose national tax is nil, still bears the surcharges. None of these amounts is typed by hand: they come out of the same engine as the net salary calculators, on the certified Italy entry.
