NSSF, SHIF and the Affordable Housing Levy are all deducted from the PAYE base (allowable since the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024), and the KES 28,800 personal relief is applied as a credit against tax. NSSF reflects the tiered upper limit raised to 108,000 KES/month from February 2026. The SHIF minimum of 300 KES/month (for very low pay) is not modelled, which does not affect typical salaries. For your situation, confirm with the KRA.

🇰🇪 Kenya

Kenya taxes employment income through PAYE with 5 progressive bands from 10% to 35% (the 32.5% and 35% top bands were added by the 2023 Finance Act). Taxable pay is gross minus three mandatory employee deductions, all allowable since the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024: NSSF pension (6%, capped at the 108,000 KES/month upper limit), SHIF health (2.75% of gross, no cap), and the Affordable Housing Levy (1.5% of gross). A personal relief of KES 28,800/year is then subtracted from the computed tax as a credit. Nairobi and Mombasa are the main employment centres.

Tax system in Kenya

Kenya taxes employment income through PAYE, with progressive bands from 10% to 35% (the 32.5% and 35% top bands were introduced by the 2023 Finance Act). Chargeable pay is gross salary minus three mandatory employee deductions that are now allowable for tax: NSSF pension (6%, capped at the 108,000 KES/month upper limit), the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) at 2.75% of gross, and the Affordable Housing Levy at 1.5% of gross. A personal relief of KES 28,800 per year is then applied as a credit against the tax due. Nairobi is the regional hub for finance, technology and development organisations, drawing many expatriate professionals.
