Net salary in Switzerland

Switzerland: income tax is levied at three levels in 2026, federal, cantonal and municipal, so the total depends on where you live. On a gross salary of CHF 100,000, a single filer pays 6% income tax in Zug and 18.3% in Neuchâtel, taking the reference municipality of each canton. The EXPATRIATION.IO calculator computes net take-home pay canton by canton, including employee social contributions.

Cross-border status reflects a factual situation. Qualifying an individual situation is a matter for a qualified professional.

Tax system in Switzerland

Switzerland levies income tax at three levels, federal, cantonal and municipal, so the same gross does not give the same net from one canton to the next. Employee contributions are AVS/AI/APG (5.3%), unemployment insurance (1.1% up to 148,200 CHF), the occupational pension (7 to 18% of the coordinated salary by age, the employer owing at least as much as all its employees together) and non-occupational accident insurance; the mandatory health insurance (LAMal) is paid separately and is not deducted from salary. A 13th salary is owed where agreed, and 75.9% of employees received one in 2024: the calculator proposes 13 payments by default for monthly entry. In Geneva, 8,500 CHF gross a month over 13 leave 6,750 CHF net a month over 12 to a single person. Choose the canton and municipality, the household, the age band and pillar 3a: the calculator returns the net, the employer cost and the canton's standard health premium.

Gross to net for common salaries (2026)

Geneva (city), age 35 to 44, no church tax, no pillar 3a; single person without children, and married couple whose spouse has no income, without children; monthly gross over 13 payments. Employer cost: federal contributions and the Geneva lines, without the occupational accident premium and the AVS administration costs. Estimates for planning, identical to the calculator for Geneva.

13th salary: how to read a Swiss offer

A 13th salary is not a legal obligation: the employer pays the salary agreed, customary or set by a standard or collective employment contract, and a special payment is owed when it has been agreed. It is the majority practice: in 2024, 75.9% of employees received a 13th salary, 46.4% of companies paid one to almost all their staff and 27.9% paid none. An offer is most often expressed as an annual gross salary or as a monthly salary over 13: 8,500 CHF a month over 13 payments make 110,500 CHF a year, the same as 9,208.33 CHF over 12.

The calculator proposes 13 payments by default for monthly entry and shows the net over 12 months and per payment: in Geneva, 110,500 CHF gross leave 80,995 CHF net a year to a single person, 6,750 CHF a month over 12. The federal wage statistics (Swiss Earnings Structure Survey) express wages as a standardised monthly amount over 40 hours and 4 1/3 weeks, one twelfth of the 13th salary and one twelfth of bonuses included, family allowances excluded: a median wage from that survey is multiplied by 12, not 13, to get back to the annual figure.

Geneva: examples at 5,000, 8,500, 10,000 and 12,000 CHF a month

Over 13 payments, these salaries make 65,000, 110,500, 130,000 and 156,000 CHF a year. In Geneva (city), for a single person aged 35 to 44, without church tax or pillar 3a, the annual net after federal, cantonal and municipal income tax and AVS/AI/APG, AC, LPP and AANP contributions is 52,019, 80,995, 93,127 and 108,995 CHF. For a married couple whose spouse has no income, without children, the married tariff gives 57,460, 89,632, 102,679 and 119,577 CHF. On 130,000 CHF the same single person keeps 97,397 CHF in Zurich and 105,814 CHF in Zug, at the reference municipality of each canton.

The compulsory health insurance is not withheld from salary: the premium is paid each month by the insured person to the insurer. To gauge its weight, the 2026 average standard premium of an adult aged 26 or over in the canton of Geneva is 730 CHF a month (300 CHF franchise, accident cover included), and the Swiss average adult premium, all franchises and models, 465.30 CHF. The calculator shows the standard premium of the selected canton under the net without deducting it. A cross-border worker living in France has a dedicated scenario in the calculator and a separate page of benchmarks.

Geneva minimum wage and Swiss median wage

The Geneva cantonal minimum wage is 24.59 CHF gross an hour since 1 January 2026 (24.48 in 2025), which the State of Geneva converts to 4,262.27 CHF a month for a 40-hour week and 4,368.82 CHF for 41 hours. It is indexed each year on the Geneva consumer price index of August, upwards only; outside agriculture (18.07 CHF) and the cases the cantonal law excludes, it prevails over any lower salary set by an individual contract, a collective agreement or a standard contract, and it may be paid in 13 monthly instalments, on an hourly base of 22.70 CHF in 2026. Entered in the calculator over 12 months, 4,262.27 CHF a month (51,147 CHF a year) leave 3,569 CHF net a month in Geneva.

The Swiss median wage was 7,024 CHF gross a month in 2024 for a full-time position, private and public sectors together (6,788 in 2022); the lowest-paid 10% earned less than 4,635 CHF and the highest-paid 10% more than 12,526 CHF, with 7,502 CHF in the Zurich region and 5,708 in Ticino. The Lake Geneva region (Vaud, Valais, Geneva) stands at 6,998 CHF, and the canton of Geneva alone at 7,893 CHF (cantonal statistics 2024, 40 hours; 7,365 in the private sector, 9,108 in the public sector). The contractual weekly working time of full-time employees is 41 h 42 min in 2025, the law capping the week at 45 hours in industry, offices and the retail trade of large companies, and at 50 hours elsewhere.

Employer cost in Switzerland

For the employer, the federal contributions come on top of the gross: 5.3% of AVS/AI/APG (the same share as the employee, 10.6% in total), 1.1% of unemployment insurance on the part of the salary up to 148,200 CHF (nothing above it since 2023) and the occupational pension, for which the employer's contributions must be at least equal to the sum of all its employees' contributions: the legal minimum is 7, 10, 15 or 18% of the coordinated salary by age (from 25 to 34 up to 55 to 65), the coordinated salary being the part of the annual salary between 26,460 and 90,720 CHF, at least 3,780 CHF, for an annual salary above 22,680 CHF with the same employer. The occupational accident premium is borne by the employer, the non-occupational one in principle by the employee; each insurer sets its own tariff, on an insured gain capped at 148,200 CHF.

Cantonal levies come on top: in Geneva, 2.22% of family allowances to the cantonal fund (cantonal funds levy between 1.025 and 2.75% depending on the canton), 0.029% of cantonal maternity insurance and 0.07% of early-childhood contribution, borne by the employer, plus the administration costs of the AVS compensation fund, capped at 5% of contributions. On 110,500 CHF gross in Geneva, the employer cost estimated by the calculator is 123,347 CHF, federal contributions and Geneva lines, without the occupational accident premium and the administration costs; the gross-to-net table above repeats it for each amount.
